Lori Telenda is a certified elementary education teacher. Lori’s passion for literacy is further reflected in her training through the esteemed Orton Gillingham Academy and Wilson Language Training. This specialized training ensures that she possesses the knowledge and skills required to employ the most effective teaching methods for all students, especially those with dyslexia. Lori brings a wealth of experience working with various structured literacy programs, including the Wilson Reading System, All About Reading, SIIPs, and IMSE. Her ability to adapt her teaching approach to meet the unique needs of each child is a testament to her dedication to your child's success.
With six years of classroom experience, Lori Telenda's teaching journey has been marked by a profound love for helping students achieve their full potential. Learning that 1 in 5 people walking the planet has dyslexia, yet only 1 in 20 dyslexics are ever diagnosed fuels her passion for teaching students with dyslexia, and igniting a genuine love of reading in their hearts is at the core of her educational mission.
Lori’s desire to continue making a difference in the lives of students led her to establish Start Here Learning. Her unwavering commitment to helping students grow their reading skills using the Orton Gillingham approach is the driving force behind this endeavor.
Dyslexia is a genetic learning difference that impacts the part of the brain responsible for reading, spelling, and writing. It affects approximately 1 in 5 people globally, yet only 1 in 20 dyslexics are formally diagnosed. Unfortunately, many individuals with dyslexia struggle to access the necessary support and resources they need to thrive and learn.
It's important to note that dyslexia also has its strengths. Many dyslexics exhibit exceptional creativity and possess a high level of comprehension. They tend to think quickly and often have above-average intelligence, earning them the label of "out-of-the-box thinkers." Additionally, dyslexics often have better peripheral vision compared to atypical individuals.
Orton-Gillingham (OG) is a structured and highly effective approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling, especially for dyslexic children.
Orton-Gillingham is tailored to the unique needs of each child. A trained OG tutor assesses your child's specific strengths and weaknesses and designs a personalized program to address their challenges.
OG uses a multi-sensory approach that engages multiple senses (seeing, hearing, touching) to reinforce learning. This helps dyslexic children process information more effectively, as it accommodates various learning styles.
OG strongly emphasizes phonics, systematically teaching the relationship between sounds and letters. Dyslexic children often struggle with phonological awareness, and OG provides a structured way to build these skills.
OG tutors provide clear, explicit instruction, ensuring dyslexic children understand the rules and patterns of the English language. This contrasts with more traditional teaching methods, which may be less effective for dyslexic students.
Dyslexic children often face frustration and low self-esteem due to their reading difficulties. OG helps them experience success, which can significantly boost their confidence and motivation to learn.
The skills learned through OG are transferable to other subjects and real-life situations. Improved reading and writing abilities can benefit a child's overall academic performance and daily life. Orton-Gillingham can be effective for dyslexic individuals of all ages, from young children to adults. It's never too late to start, and progress can be made at any stage.
OG is backed by research and has a strong track record of success in helping dyslexic individuals improve their reading and writing abilities.
I teach my students effective study strategies that help them retain information and apply it to their coursework. I believe that learning how to learn is just as important as the subject matter itself.
